Wedding Venues

Wedding photography at The West Mill in Derby

A former cotton mill by the banks of the River Derwent, this is the perfect setting for anyone looking for something a bit quirky, different, and non-traditional.

The venue is huge – accommodating up to 160 guests – and is split into loads of different spaces, resulting in a real variety in your photos.

INDUSTRIAL FEEL WEDDING VENUE

Full of bare brick walls, vaulted ceilings and original finishes, there’s a rough and ready, industrial feel to the space, whilst somehow being perfectly polished at the same time. Think swanky, high-end, New York loft apartment but on a giant scale.

WHY THE WEST MILL IS A GREAT VENUE FOR WEDDING PHOTOS?

Set across four floors, with a different one for each stage of the wedding, the real show-stopper is the ceremony room itself with its unusual cast iron ceiling and shiny blue brick floor tiles. It’s flanked by the original Georgian paned windows, which flood the room with light.

After the ceremony you can hang out in The Gallery with its cosy Chesterfield sofas or spill out into the courtyard if it’s a sunny day. There’s also a walkway along the side of the river, with a view of the nearby weir, which is a great spot for pictures.

The wedding breakfast area is a huge space which you can really make your own, choosing either long trestle tables or traditional round tables – and I can vouch for the fact that the food is totally delicious!

In the evening most guests end up dancing the night away in the Spinning Room, which is a cosy space filled with booth seating and a stylish reclaimed wood bar.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY AT WEST MILL DERBY

The size of the building and the choice of different rooms means it’s a great venue even when it rains, as there are so many opportunities to capture cool pictures indoors. There’s also natural light flooding into the space from all directions, which is a key component of great wedding photos. It’s definitely an all-year-round venue!

I love the quirky little features you can find everywhere, like the buckets full of sand to put fires out on the staircase, the retro cigarette vending machine and the gramophone. Everywhere you look there are unique touches which lend themselves to fab photos.

As a wedding photographer based in Nottingham, I absolutely love the West Mill weddings and it’s one of my favorite venue near me.

NON-TRADITIONAL WEDDING VENUE IDEA

This is such a cool venue and I always have so much fun there. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s planning a larger wedding and couples looking for something more modern and edgy that breaks with traditional wedding stereotypes.

TESTIMONIAL

If like me, you don’t really like posed photos, and prefer the more candid, captured moment vibe, then Magda is your gal! Having her there on the day was just like having a friend there, who would rush around, capturing all the special moments. She is really fun and laid back –  I felt so at ease when having my couple shots done, thanks to her. It’s going to take me forever to decide which photos to print – I love them all so much. Thank you Magda. You really are the best at what you do and I wish you every success.
